CALIFORNIA BAR EXAM PREP

California bar prep should match the administration you will actually take.

California is not a legacy UBE jurisdiction. NCBE reports that California will begin administering the NextGen UBE in July 2028. Candidates sitting before that transition should follow California's state-specific exam rules rather than a legacy UBE assumption.

CURRENT TRANSITION TIMELINE

California: first NextGen UBE administration — July 2028

February 2027State-specific exam
July 2027State-specific exam
February 2028State-specific exam
July 2028NextGen UBE

This timeline reflects the official NCBE NextGen adoption table checked October 3, 2026. Because jurisdictions can change local rules, filing procedures, or admission prerequisites, use the official source and the California admissions authority for controlling requirements.

Before the transition

The pre-transition study assumption for California is State-specific exam. Testify uses the jurisdiction plus the exam month/year so it does not silently route every candidate into the same national workflow.

At and after July 2028

Once the listed NextGen administration is reached, Testify changes the exam-format label and separates NextGen-format work from older MBE/MEE/MPT material. Legacy materials can still be useful for foundational doctrine or transferable writing skills when clearly labeled, but they should not be represented as full NextGen simulations.

Use the free checker

The bar exam format checker is the fastest way to pair a jurisdiction with a specific February or July administration and receive direct official-source links.

Then choose the study package

Testify's planned founding Bar Review price is $249 for one covered exam cycle. The product is practice-first and uses original educational questions rather than claiming licensed NCBE questions. Public checkout remains off during private beta.

WHAT TO VERIFY OUTSIDE TESTIFY

Exam format is only one part of bar admission.

Confirm application deadlines, educational eligibility, character-and-fitness filing, local components, required jurisdiction-specific courses or tests, passing-score rules, laptop/software requirements, and any accommodations or documentation deadlines directly with the jurisdiction. Testify's routing tool is designed to prevent a format mismatch; it is not an admissions portal.

For the controlling national transition date, use NCBE's NextGen adoption table. For the subjects and skills tested on NextGen, use the official NextGen content scope.
